Choose Takeo when the red Romon gate, a compact historic bath and a walkable station-to-onsen approach are the point of the day. Choose Ureshino when you want a public bath, tea and an onsen-town lunch, and you are willing to plan the last connection from the shinkansen station. The rail journey differs by only one stop. The useful difference appears after you leave the platform.
A dated Hakata comparison
This comparison uses the JR Kyushu timetable valid 14 March 2026 to 28 February 2027 and fares published by JR Kyushu, checked on 20 October 2026. It is one reproducible morning example, not a promise that every train has the same pattern.
| Destination | Example service from Hakata | Platform-to-platform time | Published online ticket used for comparison | What remains after the train |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Takeo-Onsen | Relay Kamome 1, 06:00–07:00 | 60 min | Kyushu Net Ticket ¥2,400 | Roughly a 10–15 minute walk to the Romon and public baths |
| Ureshino-Onsen | Relay Kamome 1 06:00–07:00, same-platform Kamome 1 07:03–07:10 | 70 min | Kamome Net Ticket ¥3,990 | Bus or taxi to the old onsen town; the station is outside its walkable core |
The Ureshino product covers the limited express and Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen on one route. The Takeo price comes from JR Kyushu’s published online-ticket revision table. Inventory and product conditions can change, so retrieve both journeys again for your actual date before paying. The calculation shows a 10-minute platform-time difference and a ¥1,590 one-way ticket difference in this dated comparison. It does not include the Ureshino last-mile fare.

Takeo is the simpler same-day anchor
Takeo-Onsen Station and the gate district belong to the same walkable plan. Start with the Romon and Shinkan exterior, then choose whether the bath is the main event or whether you will continue toward Takeo Shrine. The official town map is useful here because the shrine and library extend the walk beyond the gate cluster.
The current Tourist Association page lists Motoyu from 06:30 to 23:45, with final reception at 23:00, and an adult price of ¥500. That long window gives a day-tripper room to place the bath at the start or end of the visit. It does not make every attraction equally close, and it does not verify another bath’s tattoo or private-room policy.

Use this compact sequence if you are returning to Hakata the same day:
- Walk from the station to the Romon and Shinkan area.
- Bathe at Motoyu if its live notice still matches your plan.
- Add either Takeo Shrine or the library, then turn back. Treat Mifuneyama Rakuen as a separate time block rather than an automatic fourth stop.
Ureshino rewards a better last-mile plan
Ureshino-Onsen Station made the long-distance journey faster, but it did not move the historic bath streets beside the platform. Ureshino City’s page for Siebold no Yu tells visitors that Ureshino Bus Center is a 7-minute walk away and that the shinkansen station is about 5 minutes by car. Choose the bus, a taxi or a confirmed accommodation shuttle before departure.
The same city page lists Siebold no Yu at 06:00–22:00, last admission 21:30, closed on the third Wednesday of each month or the following day when that Wednesday is a holiday. The current adult public-bath price is ¥450. Towels are not supplied, so bring one or buy what is available locally. These are the public bath’s conditions; ryokan day-use hours and reservation rules are separate.
Once in the old town, keep the route small: Siebold no Yu, one tea stop and onsen yudofu are enough for a day-trip core. Add Toyotamahime Shrine or a footbath if the return connection leaves room. A tea-field facility outside the center needs its own transport plan.
What three completed trips change
Fuiba Railway’s 16 August 2018 series traveled from Hakata through Takeo, used the bus to Ureshino, ate onsen yudofu near the bus center and returned to Takeo by the same route. It predates the shinkansen, so its timetable is retired; its useful lesson is that the bus-center side forms a coherent food-and-bath cluster.
Omiichan’s 12 April 2023 account used the new shinkansen for the roughly 5–6 minute hop, found no convenient bus on arrival, took a taxi to the town, then spent about an hour walking back to the station. The writer later walked from Takeo-Onsen Station to the Romon and onward. This supports planning Ureshino’s last mile explicitly and treating Takeo as the easier station walk; it does not establish today’s taxi price or bus frequency.
Potesawa’s 7 March 2022 day trip left Hakata at 09:31, changed to a bus at Takeo and reached Ureshino around 11:31, then combined the shrine, Siebold no Yu and lunch. That trip also predates the shinkansen. Its two-hour arrival window is a historical completed itinerary, not a current timetable, but it shows why three focused town stops are more credible than attaching every outlying attraction.
Can you do both towns in one day?
Yes, if one town remains clearly secondary. A workable order is Takeo gate and bath in the morning, then Kamome to Ureshino and a preselected bus or taxi to the old town. The reverse works when Ureshino’s bath and lunch are the priority and your return from the town to the station is already fixed.
Do not count the 7-minute shinkansen hop as the whole transfer. Add walking to the platform, waiting, and Ureshino’s last mile. If your booking search does not leave at least a two-hour block in the second town, keep one town for another day.

Choose Takeo for the easier car-free day and architecture around the gate. Choose Ureshino for a slower bath-and-food day after solving the station transfer. Check the live JR search, the bath closure notice and your return connection before leaving Hakata.
