Open the saved list at the Hongik University Station map and it usually looks like this: twelve Yeonnam cafés, Gyeongui Line Book Street, the Saturday free market, busking on the walking street, one club. They all sit under the same station name, so it feels as if half a day should cover them.
The two neighborhoods are next to each other, but they run on different clocks. The Yeonnam stretch of Gyeongui Line Forest Park is a daylight walk. Hongdae’s walking street fills up in the evening, and street performances are not allowed after 10 pm. And a few places on that list are no longer what the old photos show.
So for a first visit, this is the order I would suggest. Come out of exit 3 around 3 pm, walk the Yeonnam park, stop at one café, cross to Hongdae as it gets dark, eat dinner, and give the street the hours before 10 pm. How to change that order for what you came for, and what to delete from an old list, comes after.
One station, and the exit decides the neighborhood
Hongik University Station is served by Line 2, the AREX airport railroad and the Gyeongui-Jungang Line. There is no separate Yeonnam station. Whichever line you arrive on, the only real choice is the exit. AREX station page
For Yeonnam, take exit 3. The Yeonnam section of Gyeongui Line Forest Park runs from this side, and this is the stretch people call Yeontral Park. Seoul Media Hub For Hongdae’s walking street, take exit 8 or 9 and walk towards Hongik University. Mapo-gu Office A 2024 citizen-reporter article on Seoul Media Hub points out that Line 2’s exit 9 is badly crowded precisely because it is the quickest way into the middle of Hongdae. Seoul Media Hub
The order in this guide comes from using each of those exits once. Leave by exit 3, spend the afternoon in Yeonnam, come back past the station and carry on towards exits 8 and 9. Going back and forth between the café lanes and the performance street only adds walking.
3 pm: walk the park once, all the way
Gyeongui Line Forest Park was built on top of the old Gyeongui railway after the tracks were moved underground. According to a citizen-reporter article on Seoul Media Hub, it runs 6.3 km across Mapo-gu and Yongsan-gu, and the Yeonnam section is 1.2 km of that. At an ordinary pace you can take in that section slowly in a little over 30 minutes. Seoul Media Hub: the Yeonnam section

If I were planning this afternoon, I would walk the Yeonnam section to its end only once and choose the side lanes for the way back. Walking the same path there and back turns an hour into nothing but walking. The full 6.3 km is a walk for another day: after Yeonnam, the park continues into the Wau Bridge (Wau-gyo) section and away from Hongdae.

One café is enough. If the point is to sit down, Cafe Comma Hongdae (카페꼼마 홍대점), a book café near exit 3, fits the route best. As of 7 October 2026 it is open every day 10:00–22:00, last orders 21:30. Cafe Comma Hongdae Put it at the end of the walk, on your way back towards the station. If coffee itself is the point, Blue Bottle Yeonnam on Seongmisan-ro 32-gil is open daily 08:30–20:00. Blue Bottle Korea
Eat lunch before you come. The Japanese travel writer k, in a post published on 25 January 2026, arrived at HOTEL DE GGOODD, a pasta place in Yeonnam, after 2 pm and still waited outside for about 30 minutes. At that restaurant, a late lunch was not a way round the queue. If you start at 3, arrive fed, spend Yeonnam on a drink and the walk, and save the proper meal for Hongdae in the evening.
Split that way, the afternoon looks roughly like this. Treat it as a reference point, not a timetable.
| Time | What to do | Where |
|---|---|---|
| 15:00 | Walk the Yeonnam section to the end, return through the lanes | Exit 3 |
| 16:00 | One café | Cafe Comma or Blue Bottle Yeonnam |
| 17:00 | Yeonnam shops, or shopping on the Hongdae side | Past the station towards exits 8 and 9 |
| 18:00 | Dinner | Hongdae |
| 19:00–22:00 | The walking street, and busking if someone is playing | Exits 8 and 9 side |
Hongdae at dusk: dinner first
The walking street is a short pedestrian stretch around Eoulmadang-ro. In a daytime photo it looks close to an ordinary shopping street. If the street is what you came for, come in the evening. Street performances end at 10 pm, so the two or three hours after dark are its main hours.

Busking here has rules. Since December 2022, Mapo-gu has opened the walking street’s busking zones only to performers who register in advance. Performers get time slots by lottery and use 1 hour 50 minutes at a time. Performing outside the booked spot, or after 10 pm, is not allowed. Mapo-gu Office Visit Seoul describes the street the same way, as a busking street for pre-registered performers.
None of that promises that someone will be playing at a given hour. One traveler who had been to Hongdae several times wrote in a March 2024 Reddit post that across visits between 4 pm and 10 pm on different nights, they could find no pattern: one warm weekend it was empty, one cold weekday it was packed. The replies suggested following performers on Instagram for their schedules.
That is why dinner comes first. Eat around 6, walk the street from 7, and if someone is playing you watch; if not, it was an evening walk. Wait for a show and push dinner back, and you risk getting neither properly. If there is a group you want to see, check their account for the date and spot first, and plan dinner on the basis that it all ends before 10.

At the end of October, factor in Halloween. For its 24 October–2 November 2025 Halloween safety period, Seoul named Hongdae a priority crowd-management zone. Seoul Media Hub, 24 October 2025 With children, keep only the Yeonnam afternoon on the last weekend of October.
Change the order for what you came for
For cafés and walking, you can drop the Hongdae night altogether. If you spend a whole day in Yeonnam rather than half, two cafés are fine: it just adds one more place to sit between the park and the lanes. If you are coming straight off an overnight flight and arrive at 8 am, the branch matters. As of 7 October 2026, Blue Bottle Hongdae (in the lobby of the RYSE hotel on Yanghwa-ro) opens at 07:30, Blue Bottle Yeonnam at 08:30 and Cafe Comma Hongdae at 10:00. At 8, only Blue Bottle Hongdae of the three is open. Choose the Yeonnam branch and you wait 30 minutes; choose Comma and you wait two hours.
For shopping, turn the order round. Do the Hongdae shops first and use Yeonnam as the break. The writer k mentioned above also walked over from Yeonnam to Hongdae and ended up buying a few things at the MUSINSA STANDARD Hongdae store. On a shopping day you don’t need to walk the whole park. Sitting down once somewhere close to exit 3, such as Cafe Comma, makes it easy to go back to the shops.
For clubs, check age and ID first. Korea’s Youth Protection Act defines a youth as a person under 19, excluding anyone who has reached 1 January of the year they turn 19. Korea Law Information Center In other words, it goes by birth year, not birthday: in 2026, anyone born in 2007 or earlier is legally an adult. Some doors check age against your passport, so carry the original.
Being legally old enough is not the whole story. Two 32-year-old men wrote in a June 2024 Reddit post that they were turned away from three places in Hongdae on a Wednesday night. The first club looked at a passport and refused them without explanation; at the other two they were told they were too old and that 1996 births were the cut-off. Later that night Itaewon was no problem, they said. Commenters in their mid-30s reported getting in, so it varies by venue and by night. If you are past 30, don’t stake the whole evening on one Hongdae club. A show with a fixed date and a ticket is the surer plan. Sangsangmadang Hongdae, at 65 Eoulmadang-ro, has a live hall, a gallery and a cinema under one roof. Sangsangmadang
Another ticketed evening is SHOW’S, a taekwondo performance pub about five minutes from exit 9, which sells seats on Klook. On 23 October a seat was 18,800 won with free cancellation up to 48 hours before, and the venue also requires food and drink orders on top of the ticket.
On your departure day, take only the Yeonnam afternoon and leave the Hongdae night for another trip. Hongik University is a stop on the AREX all-stop train. The Express runs non-stop between Seoul Station and Incheon Airport, so it does not stop here. With a T-money or other transit card, the adult fare is 4,650 won to Terminal 1 and 5,250 won to Terminal 2 (checked 7 October 2026). AREX fares The official journey time from Seoul Station is 59 minutes to Terminal 1 and 66 minutes to Terminal 2, with some trains taking 2–6 minutes longer, and Hongik University is two stops closer to the airport than Seoul Station. AREX all-stop train With an evening flight, the hour the performances start is the hour you should be heading to the airport. Rather than pushing your departure back for busking, stop after the walk and the café and go to the station.
If it rains, cut the park walk short and spend more time indoors. Cafe Comma is open from 10 am to 10 pm, and at Sangsangmadang you can pick that day’s exhibition or show whatever the weather. Busking is outdoors, so don’t count on it on a wet evening.
What to delete from an old list
Gyeongui Line Book Street. If you have seen photos of train-car bookstalls lined up by exit 6, that book street no longer exists. The bookshop booths stopped operating in June 2023, and Mapo-gu rebuilt the stretch and reopened it in 2024 as a creators’ space called Red Road Power Plant. Kyunghyang Shinmun, June 2023 Seoul Media Hub, October 2024 According to the October 2024 citizen-reporter article on Seoul Media Hub, it now houses resident creators, a promotion hall, a shop selling character goods and public toilets. Drop in if you are passing, but there is no longer a reason to make the trip for books.
The Saturday free market. For years, the art market at the “Hongdae playground” in front of the university’s main gate was the reason to come on a Saturday. As of 7 October 2026, Mapo-gu’s tourism page still lists it as every Saturday. But a citizen-reporter article on Seoul Media Hub, 18 March 2026, reports that the park has been turned into an art and exhibition space called Geurim-dongne. Whether the market still runs on the same spot this year is not confirmed by any official schedule. It is not worth moving your Hongdae day to a Saturday for. If it happens to be on, take it as a bonus.
Café hopping. Yeonnam has a lot of cafés and the saved list is always long. But every extra café adds its own queue and its own walk. If you already plan a café afternoon in Seongsu, one café in Yeonnam is enough. Give the time you save to the Hongdae evening.
Walk the park in Yeonnam while it is light, and have dinner in Hongdae as the lights come on. Keep those two scenes and this neighborhood fits comfortably into half a day. Don’t delete the rest of the list; carry it over to your next trip to Seoul.
Opening hours and fares as of 7 October 2026.
